UpSkill: Compliance AI That Can't Afford to Be Wrong
Compliance professionals can't use ChatGPT.
Not for the work that matters. A confident wrong answer about anti-money laundering rules can cost a firm fines or its licence. When a compliance officer advises a financial services firm, "the AI said so" does not hold up in front of a regulator.
UpSkill is an AML/CFT compliance partner serving New Zealand and Australia. They train compliance teams, certify compliance officers, and advise firms on their obligations. Their clients need answers daily, and getting them means reading legislation, regulator guidance, and internal policy.
We helped build the UpSkill Q&Aᴬᴵ Assistant: real-time answers drawn from law, guidance, UpSkill's own expertise, and the customer's internal policies and documents.
Why Compliance Is Different
Traceability is mandatory. The right answer is not enough. When a regulator asks how a conclusion was reached, the source has to be named. General-purpose chat tools blend sources and hide where each claim came from.
Sources disagree. Legislation, regulator guidance, and a firm's internal policy can each say something different about the same question. A system that merges them into one voice destroys the distinction professionals need.
A made-up answer is a liability. Someone acts on it. A client makes a decision. "The AI hallucinated" is not a defence.
Domain knowledge drives the design. Which sections carry legal weight, how guidance should be read, what practitioners actually ask, what a useful answer looks like. UpSkill brought that. Our job was engineering worthy of it.
What We Helped Build
Every answer is grounded in named sources. Users pick which knowledge bases a question runs against: the law and regulator guidance, UpSkill's expertise, or their own internal documents.
We worked alongside UpSkill's team on the build. Their compliance specialists made the domain calls: how sources appear, what tone answers take, when the system declines to answer. We turned those calls into working software.
Where It Stands
The Q&Aᴬᴵ Assistant is live and serving compliance professionals in New Zealand and Australia. The two markets run different regulatory frameworks and different terms. The platform handles both.
